Lanarkshire’s unemployment crises was underlined by a jobs fair held at South Lanarkshire Council offices in Hamilton. No fewer than 100 people attended the event that gave jobseekers and potential employers the chance to meet face to face. The country’s unemployment total has gone by almost 10,000 in 12 months and in august there were more than 20,000 people on Job Seekers Allowance. 21 employers attended the jobs fair which was officially opened by JCP manager for Lanarkshire and East Dumbartonshire Rena Kinloch. A job centre plus spokesman said “all the employers were impressed by the jobseekers they met and they enjoyed speaking to them face to face than written applications.

One of the employers was Ajmal Mushtaqs of Mushtaqs restaurant in Hamilton. Her used the jobsfair to add to his staff 26 yr old Avalon Orr from Blantyre who had been unemployed for 10 months. Following the jobsfair she was invited for an interview and was offered and was delighted to accept the position of customer service advisor at the restaurant. Ajmal and is wife Nisreen took over the family business last year and have invested 500,000 pounds in the business. They have also increased the number of staff from 12 to 22. Ajmal said he is a firm backer of the Jobsfair adding “ I would strongly recommend anyone looking for employment to attend any future events” Mushtaqs Restaurant also signed up to the local employment partnership with job centre plus. Ms Kinloch said these local employment partnerships are a deal between government and employers. The government through JCP and their Employment Partners get people ready for work and employers with vacancies gave them a fair shot at their job.

Another employer present was century 21 UK managing director Stuart White who said “I thought the event was a tremendous success and having attended a number of these events across the UK, this is certainly the best attended and organised event that I have experience”
