A Hamilton chef has been crowned Scotland’s chef of the year. Ajmal Mushtaq of Mushtaqs restaurant in Hamilton, was crowned Scotland’s Chef of the Year at the glittering Scottish Curry Awards at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow.

It was an extremely tight contest and nominations came in from all over Scotland in the race to be crowned Chef of the Year at this years awards ceremony. Over 700 people attended including a star studded line of VIPs and celebrities.

It was a vibrant night, representing the best of Scotland’s curry industry and the Chef of the Year Award was presented to Ajmal Mushtaq.

Hans Ram, CEO of Goldstar Chefs and award sponsor said: “Our judging panel agreed that Ajmal clearly creates the most authentic Indian Food in Scotland. He is passionate about changing people’s perceptions and promoting the health benefits of Proper Indian Food. Mushtaq’s restaurant has enjoyed great success and is a testament to his unique approach.”

Chef Mushtaq said: “It is a real honour and I am truly humbled that the judges realised that Mushtaqs is leading the way in promoting both the health and taste benefits of Proper Indian Food. I am delighted”.

“It has been our most successful year so far in which we have seen Mushtaqs retain its crown as the cleanest restaurant in South Lanarkshire for the second year running, appointed as the only Indian Chef at the BBC good Show, and now to be crowned Chef of the Year is very humbling and overwhelming.”

The awards official charity partner is the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and over £18,000 has been raised for the Association.
There was cause for double celebration this week as Ajmal was given a leading role at Scotland’s biggest food and drink event, ‘Enjoy the Taste of Scotland’ in Glasgow’s George Square.

Ajmal unveiled more dishes from his increasingly famous Mushtaqs Recipe Book and featured on stage four times to showcase his traditional cooking techniques.

Angus Bell, Senior Local Buying Manger for Tesco in Scotland said: “This event celebrated the very best of Scottish fare and we were delighted to have Ajmal cooking live in the cookery theatre over the two days.”
